Contract staffing or permanent hiring: how to choose

Choose contract or temporary staffing when the need is time-bound or uncertain, and permanent hiring when the role is core and long-term. Many employers use both.

Short answer: use contract or temporary staffing when the need is time-bound, uncertain or seasonal. Hire permanently when the role is core to your business and you expect to need it for the long term. Many organisations use a mix: a permanent core team with contract staff for peaks and projects.

Start with four questions

  1. How long will you need this role? A defined project or season points to contract or temporary staffing. An open-ended need points to a permanent hire.
  2. How certain is the demand? If volumes may change, contract staffing lets you adjust headcount more easily, within the terms of your agreement.
  3. How specialised is the knowledge? Roles that build up know-how about your customers, products or systems usually benefit from permanent staff.
  4. Who will handle employment administration? With contract staffing, a staffing partner typically handles agreed administration for the contract period. With permanent hiring, your organisation does.

When contract staffing tends to fit

  • A project with a known end date
  • Seasonal or event-driven peaks
  • Limits on permanent headcount
  • Testing a new role or location before committing

When permanent hiring tends to fit

  • Core, ongoing roles
  • Roles that need significant training or company-specific knowledge
  • Leadership and team-lead positions
  • Roles where continuity matters to customers

Think about compliance early

Whichever model you choose, employment in India is governed by labour laws, including the Labour Codes, which set out obligations on wages, social security and working conditions. Responsibilities for contract workers are shared between the employer and the contractor in ways that depend on the arrangement. Confirm your obligations with a qualified legal or compliance adviser, and make sure your service agreement states clearly who is responsible for what.

A mixed approach

You do not have to choose one model for every role. A common approach is to keep a permanent core team, use contract staffing for defined projects, and bring in temporary staff for short peaks. Review the mix every few months as your needs change.
